The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Uittoyhdistyksen talo Varissalmen puolella on muistona uittokaudesta. Koskeen liittyvän myllyperinteen rakennukset maantiesillan kupeessa on kunnostettu.

Kosken ranta-aluetta leimaa peltomaisema. Yläpihan peltomaisema on säilynyt Juhani Ahon aikaisessa muodossaan ja uudempi rakentaminen on sijoittunut kylänraitin varteen vanhempaa rakennuskantaa ja kylärakennetta täydentäen.

Kosken itärannalla on venäläisten rakennuttamia ensimmäisen maailmansodan aikaisia linnoituslaitteita.

Huopanankoskeen oli merkitty isojaossa Kolehmaisen talon kotitarvemylly. Kosken ympäristö oli muuten asumaton.

Koski perattiin kruunun toimesta uittoa varten 1862-1864, jolloin koskeen rakennettiin ohjauspuomit. Uitto kasvoi 1870-luvulta lähtien. Huopanankosken ympäristöön syntyi 1800-luvulla tiivis kyläkeskus.

Kirjailija Juhani Aho (1861-1921) kävi kalastamassa kesäisin Huopanankoskella vuodesta 1905 lähtien aina kuolemaansa saakka. Kosken partaalla ollut Juhani Ahon kalamaja purettiin 1974.

Myllytoiminta päättyi 1950-luvulla ja tilalle tuli sähköntuotanto. 1970-luvulla kosken uittorakenteet purettiin ja koski entistettiin luonnonmukaiseen tilaan kalastusta varten.

The Huopanankoski cultural environment is a whole that reflects the diverse use of the rapids as a site for milling and salmon fishing, and as a log-driving channel, and which also has personal historical value. Huopanankoski is known above all for the work of the writer Juhani Aho: "There is no region in the world to which I have become attached with so many wonderful moods and pleasant memories as to Huopana. Some day, in its honour, I will compose a hymn in which I will use all the tongues that the Finnish language has at my disposal."

Huopanankoski, between Varisalmi and Pouninsalmi, was one of the most popular salmon-fishing sites in the inland areas at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The log-driving channel in the rapids was dismantled after the repeal of the log-driving regulations, and the rapids were restored to their natural state. The log-driving association's house on the Varisalmi side is a reminder of the log-driving period. The buildings of the milling tradition associated with the rapids, next to the road bridge, have been restored.

The shore area of the rapids is characterised by a field landscape. The field landscape of the upper yard has survived in the form it had in Juhani Aho's time, and newer construction has been located along the village street, complementing the older building stock and village structure.

On the east bank of the rapids are fortification structures from the First World War, built by the Russians.

Huopanankoski had been marked in the general land partition (isojako) as the domestic mill of the Kolehmainen farm. Otherwise, the area around the rapids was uninhabited.

The rapids were cleared by the Crown for log-driving in 1862-1864, when guide booms were built in the rapids. Log-driving grew from the 1870s onwards. In the 19th century a dense village centre came about in the area around Huopanankoski.

The writer Juhani Aho (1861-1921) went fishing at Huopanankoski every summer from 1905 until his death. The fishing hut of Juhani Aho that stood on the edge of the rapids was demolished in 1974.

Milling activity ended in the 1950s, and electricity production took its place. In the 1970s the log-driving structures in the rapids were dismantled, and the rapids were restored to their natural state for fishing.
