Kirkkoniemellä sijaitseva Petäjäveden vanha kirkko on valmistunut paikallisten kirvesmiesten rakentamana 1763-1765 rakennusmestari Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppäsen johdolla. Kirkko on muodoltaan tasavartinen ristikirkko johon kuuluu yhdyskäytävällä lisätty kellotapuli, jonka on rakentanut Leppäsen pojanpoika Erkki Jaakonpoika Leppänen 1821. Kirkon hirsiseinät ovat ulkopuolelta laudoittamattomat. Kirkkoa kantaa jyrkkä ja ristivarsien päistä aumattu paanukatto. Kirkkoon saavutaan tapulin pohjakerroksen kautta. Keskellä olevan kellojen nostoaukon kohdalla on säteittäin sijoitetuista laudoista koottu sininen ympyräsommitelma, taivaspyörylä.

Saarnastuoli on kirkkorakennuksen ikäinen. Alttaritauluna on Carl Fredrik Blomin maalaama Pyhä ehtoollinen vuodelta 1843.

Petäjäveden ns. uusi kirkko on puinen sisäviisteinen ristikirkko Petäjäveden taajaman tuntumassa kuivalla mäntykankaalla.

The old church of Petäjävesi is a high-quality and well-preserved example of Nordic woodbuilding skill and tradition. The church uniquely combines vernacular woodbuilding skill and log joinery techniques with pan-European stylistic features of church architecture. The church's landscape setting is provided by the Kirkkolahti bay of Jämsänvesi, beside which the parish's new church is also located. The old church, surrounded by agrarian landscape, and the new church, located in the built-up area of the church village, form a pair that reflects a centuries-long unbroken parish continuity and the development of settlement structure. The old church of Petäjävesi, with its bell tower and churchyard, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The old church of Petäjävesi, located on Kirkkoniemi, was completed in 1763-1765 by local carpenters under the direction of master builder Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen. The church is an equal-armed cross church, to which a bell tower added via a passageway is attached, built by Leppänen's grandson Erkki Jaakonpoika Leppänen in 1821. The log walls of the church are unboarded on the outside. The church is topped by a steep shingle roof, hipped at the ends of the transept arms. The church is entered through the ground floor of the bell tower. Its interior is cross-shaped, and its arms narrow outward in the manner of the false perspective favoured by the Baroque. Above the central bell-hoisting opening there is a blue circular composition assembled from radially arranged boards, the taivaspyörylä.

The arms of the nave have high-arched barrel vaults, and above the crossing there is an angular välikattokupoli. The wide carved boards of the vaulting are fixed to roof trusses supported by the walls and the tie-beam structure above them. The walls and vaults of the nave are unpainted. Only the cover battens of the vaults and the tie beams stiffening the walls bear painted decoration in red. The pulpit is contemporary with the church building. The altarpiece is Holy Communion, painted by Carl Fredrik Blom in 1843. The same artist painted the oil paintings above the second door of the sacristy depicting Luther and Moses with the tablets of the Law.

The lake landscape includes Siltaniemi, where there is a farm centre of the precentor's estate from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the narrow island of Solikkosaari, which is crossed by main road 23. The intact group of buildings of the Lemettilä farm with its fields, located west of the old church, and the single-family housing area that arose through post-war settlement activity on the northwest side, belong to the setting of the old church. The residential and production buildings of the Lemettilä farm date from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The so-called new church of Petäjävesi is a wooden cross church with internally splayed arms, located near the built-up area of Petäjävesi on dry pine heath.

The farmers of Kuivasmäki, that is Petäjävesi, which belonged to the mother parish of Jämsä, built a modest preaching house in the 1720s. The old church was built on the site of its predecessor in 1763-1764 under the direction of master builder Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen, who had worked as parish carpenter in Laukaa. The construction of the bell tower in the early 1820s was overseen by Erkki Jaakonpoika Leppänen (1776-1856), who continued in the profession of his father and grandfather. At the same time, a new sacristy was built at the east end of the church and the church windows were enlarged.

The old church fell out of use after the new church built in 1879 on the opposite shore of Kirkkosalmi was completed. The church was repaired for the first time for the parish's 200th anniversary celebrations in 1928. Its systematic care and restoration as a building monument began at the end of the 1950s.

The new church of Petäjävesi was designed by architect August Boman, and master builder Jaakko Kuorikoski acted as builder. No bell tower or cemetery was built for the new church; instead, the parish continued to use the bell tower and cemetery of the older church. The new church was repaired in 1937 to plans by architect Kauno S. Kallio and at the beginning of the 2000s.
