Kuvaus
Pallaksen matkailuhotellin alue on edustavimpia kotimaisen tunturimatkailun alkuvaiheen paikkoja ja matkailun luontoyhteyteen perustuvia kansallisia erityispiirteitä. Paikan matkailuhistoria ja Pallaksen matkailuhotellin vanhimmat osat kuvastavat Lapin matkailurakentamisen 1930-luvun ja toisen maailmansodan jälkeisen jälleenrakennuskauden tunnusomaisia piirteitä.
Pallastunturit ovat Pallas-Hetta -vaellusreitin eteläinen lähtöpiste. Tunturiurheilun saavutettua suosiota 1930-luvulla rakennettiin Pallastunturin juurelle Suomen ensimmäinen tunturihotelli. Sodassa tuhoutuneen rakennuksen tilalle 1948 valmistunut hirsinen erämaahotelli on arkkitehti Jouko Ylihannun suunnittelema. Rakennuksen hirsisessä osassa on piirteitä jälleenrakennuskauden romantiikasta, vaikka sitä onkin muutettu huomattavasti.
Pallaksen merkitystä korostaa, että Taivaskeron huipulla sytytettiin olympiatuli 6. heinäkuuta 1952. Keron laella on olympiatulen sytyttämisestä kertova muistolaatta.
Arkkitehti Jouko Yli-Hannun suunnittelema uusi hotelli rakennettiin 1948 alemmaksi rinteeseen.

Description
The Pallas tourist hotel area is one of the most representative sites of early domestic fell tourism and of the national characteristics of tourism based on contact with nature. The history of tourism at the site and the oldest parts of the Pallas tourist hotel reflect features typical of tourist construction in Lapland in the 1930s and of the post-war reconstruction period after the Second World War.
Pallastunturit fells are the southern starting point of the Pallas-Hetta hiking route. As fell sports gained popularity in the 1930s, Finland's first fell hotel was built at the foot of Pallastunturi. The log wilderness hotel completed in 1948 on the site of the building destroyed in the war was designed by architect Jouko Ylihannu. The log section of the building has features of the romanticism of the reconstruction period, although it has been considerably altered.
The significance of Pallas is underlined by the fact that the Olympic flame was lit on the summit of Taivaskero on 6 July 1952. On the top of the kero there is a memorial plaque commemorating the lighting of the Olympic flame.
The impressive backdrop to the Pallastunturi hotel is formed by the five highest keros of Pallastunturit. The tourist hotel is located in the nationally valuable landscape area "Pallastunturit", which is also classified as a national landscape.
History
The attraction of Lapland's nature and improved access to it launched a cultural phenomenon and an industry in the 1930s, whose impact in the province was considerable. The state took part in creating a network of fell hotels and tourist lodgings, as well as in their post-war reconstruction and completion.
Finland's oldest national parks, Pyhätunturi and Pallas-Ounastunturi national parks, were established in 1938. In the same year Finland's first fell hotel was completed at Pallas, up on the fell beyond a roadless stretch. The hotel was designed by architects Väinö Vähäkallio and Aulis E. Hämäläinen and was built by Suomen Matkailijayhdistys.
The Pallastunturi hotel was blown up in the final phase of the Second World War, in 1944, as the Germans withdrew from Lapland. A new hotel designed by architect Jouko Yli-Hannu was built lower down the slope in 1948. The first ski lift at Pallas was built in 1953. The first national park visitor centre in the Nordic countries was completed in 1977.
The Pallas area has traditionally been an important grazing and calving area for the Näkkälä, Kyrö and Muonio reindeer herding districts.
