The Alakönkää koskenkiertotie (rapids portage road) is a relic from the time when rivers were the main routes of travel in Lapland, and the largest rapids had to be bypassed on foot.

The main travel route to Norway and the Arctic Ocean in the far north of Lapland has been the Tenojoki. At Nuorgam, a 4.8 km road section between the Nivajoki and Alajalvi bypasses the Alakönkää rapids on the Tenojoki.

The Finnish Road Administration (Tiehallinto) designated the Nivajoki-Alajalve road a museum road site in 1983, removed it in the 1990s and restored it in 2005.

The Tenojoki formed a waterway to Norway and the Arctic Ocean. The first written mentions of the Tenojoki as a travel route date from 1598, when boat-hauling roads on the route are mentioned. The Alaköngäs was an insurmountable obstacle for boat transport. At the rapids, a track worn by travellers gradually formed along the bank as they made their way on foot.

The old rapids portage road was incorporated into the general road network in 1928, although there were no other roads in the area and the rapids portage road had no connection to any other road network. The Alakönkää road was abolished as a public road when the road from Utsjoki to Nuorgam was completed in 1967.
