The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kuoripäädyssä on puolipyöreä apsidi. Alttaritaulu "Pietari ja Johannes parantavat ramman" on William Lönnbergin maalaama vuodelta 1930. Kirkkotilan sisäarkkitehtuuri on väritykseltään ja sisustukseltaan muutettu.

Muuramen alue kuului alkuaan Jämsän emäseurakunnasta 1861 itsenäistyneeseen Korpilahden seurakuntaan. Omaksi seurakunnaksi se erotettiin 1917.

Kirkon rakentaminen Muuramenharjulle A. Ahlström osakeyhtiön lahjoittamalle tontille aloitettiin toukokuussa 1928.

The white church of Muurame and its bell tower on the high ridge are visible from afar and create a charming impression of a timeless and anonymous Italian village church on a mountainside, above the dwellings. It is young architect Alvar Aalto's first realised church design.

On one side, the rectangular church space is joined by a parish hall, whose entrance is emphasised by an arcade at the corner. On another side rises a tall campanile-type bell tower, into which the sacristy is also placed. At the chancel end is a semicircular apse. The altarpiece "Pietari ja Johannes parantavat ramman" ("Peter and John Healing the Lame Man") is a painting by William Lönnberg from 1930. The interior architecture of the church space has been altered in its colour scheme and furnishings.

The Muurame area originally belonged to the Jämsä mother parish, and then to the Korpilahti parish, which became independent in 1861. It was separated as its own parish in 1917.

Construction of the church on Muuramenharju, on a plot donated by A. Ahlström osakeyhtiö, began in May 1928. The Opetusministeriö had approved the drawings prepared by architect Alvar Aalto on 30.12.1927. The church was consecrated for use in June 1929.

In the interior designed by Aalto, the colour scheme was festive and calm. The walls were a cool, slightly light grey, and the pews, floor and barrel-vaulted ceiling were painted in a broken, very dark blue. This colour scheme was changed only a few years after the building was completed, by painting, among other things, the vault ceiling lighter.

Minor changes were made to the interior even before the furnishings designed by architect Sakari Holma, which were completed in 1979. The general appearance of the church hall, the fixed furnishings and the interior colour scheme were renewed almost entirely. The ceiling and floor were made of varnished pine, the pews and altar table were renewed, the central aisle was widened, and glass doors were installed in the doorway between the church and the parish hall.
