The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Tammijärven pohjukan asutus kuvastaa keskisuomalaista maanviljelysperinnettä ja agraariyhteisön sosiaalista rakennetta.

Asutus on muodostunut Tammijärven lounaisrannan ja Luhanka-Joutsa -maantien väliin. Maantien varrella sijaitsee Mäentalon tilakeskus, Mäentalon palkollisten mäkitupalaisalue Peltola sekä Tammisuoja-niminen seurojentalo. Mäentalon pihapiiriin kuuluvat pääosin 1800-luvulla rakennetut päärakennus, luonnonkivinavetta, karjakeittiö ja luhtiaitta. Mäentaloa ympäröivät pellot ja Tammijärven Ruunalahteen ulottuvat perinteiset laidun- ja hakamaat. Peltolan 16 rakennuksen ryhmä on saanut alkunsa 1700-luvulla. Mäkitupalaisalue on nykyisin museo.

Mäentalon hakamaa on hoidettua perinnemaisemaa.

The settlement at the head of Tammijärvi reflects central Finnish farming tradition and the social structure of an agrarian community.

The settlement has formed between the southwestern shore of Tammijärvi and the Luhanka-Joutsa road. Along the road are the Mäentalo farm centre, the Peltola mäkitupalaisalue (cottar settlement) of Mäentalo's farmhands, and the seurojentalo (society house) named Tammisuoja. The Mäentalo farmyard mainly comprises the main building, mostly built in the 19th century, a natural-stone cowshed, a cattle kitchen and a luhtiaitta. Mäentalo is surrounded by fields and traditional pasture and hakamaa (wooded meadow) lands extending to the Ruunalahti bay of Tammijärvi. The group of 16 buildings at Peltola originated in the 18th century. The cottar settlement is today a museum.

The hakamaa of Mäentalo is a managed traditional landscape. The area is part of the larger Tammijärvi cultural landscape of regional significance.

The log cottages with their small outbuildings, built on the ridge west of Mäentalo in the village of Tammijärvi, were built and inhabited by the mäkitupalaiset and muonamiehet of Mäentalo. The original cottar cottages and their associated outbuildings in their original locations have been restored, and a museum presenting the life of the cottars opened in 1962.

The Tammijärvi youth society house, Tammisuoja, was built in 1924 and extended in the 1930s. In addition to the youth society, the users were the maamieseura and the suojeluskunta.
