The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Metsäseudun suurkylän keskiajalla muodostanut Auttoinen on säilyttänyt hyvin ryhmäkylämäisen luonteensa.

Auttoisten kylä sijaitsee Länsi-Padasjoen metsäylängön keskellä, neljän järven ympäröimänä. Kylän halki virtaa Rautjärvestä Kauttisjärveen virtaava Kylänjoki. Asutusta ympäröi järvien väliselle kannakselle levittäytynyt kumpuileva viljelymaisema, jota jakavat metsäiset mäkialueet.

Auttoisen kylän ydinosalla on edelleen tiiviin ryhmäkylän luonne. Asutus on keskittynyt tiheän kylätiestön ympärille.

Kyläkeskustan itäpuolelle on tienoikaisun yhteydessä syntynyt ohitustie.

Auttoisten kylä kuuluu valtakunnallisesti arvokkaaseen Auttoinen-Vesijako maisema-alueeseen.

Auttoisten järvien rannoilta tunnetaan useita kivikautisia asuinpaikkoja.

Päijänteen rantakylien ohella Auttoinen on Padasjoen vanhimpia kyliä.

Auttoinen, which formed a large village in the forest region in the Middle Ages, has retained well its character as a cluster village.

The village of Auttoinen lies in the middle of the Länsi-Padasjoki forest upland, surrounded by four lakes. The Kylänjoki river flows through the village from Rautjärvi to Kauttisjärvi. The settlement is surrounded by a rolling farmland landscape spread across the isthmus between the lakes, divided by wooded hills.

The core of the Auttoinen village still has the character of a tight cluster village. The settlement is concentrated around a dense village road network. The fields surrounding the settlement end in a bog area to the south and in a high wooded hill to the north. In addition to the farm centres and the Hanapori cottage settlement, the older building stock of the village includes the community hall Maatalo, a school and shop buildings.

The village street, and the alignment of the country roads leading towards the parish centre of Padasjoki and the village of Vesijako, have been in use already in the 17th and 18th centuries. A bypass road was created on the east side of the village centre in connection with a road realignment.

The village of Auttoinen belongs to the Auttoinen-Vesijako landscape area, which is of national importance.

Before permanent settlement arose, the extensive forested upland of western Padasjoki was a wilderness area of Tavastia. In historical times, sparse village settlement developed around the larger lakes, and extensive wilderness areas remained between the villages. In the Middle Ages, only the villages of Auttoinen and Vesijako came into being in the area. Several Stone Age settlement sites are known from the shores of the Auttoinen lakes.

Alongside the lakeside villages of Päijänne, Auttoinen is one of the oldest villages in Padasjoki. The village of Auttoinen is first mentioned in written sources in 1464. At the beginning of the early modern period, there were 14 farms in Auttoinen, of which five belonged to the group village. After the isojako begun in the 1780s, the division of holdings increased and the group village grew.

The Hanapori area was finally formed at the end of the 19th century, when the area was divided among the farms that had been in the ruotujako of 1880, fanning out from a corner post at the highest point of the slope and laid out as 16 plots down the field slope, with cottages built along the road that runs by the wide ends of the plots.

The village cemetery east of the village was established in 1935.
