The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Pyramidikattoisen kesänavetan ainutlaatuinen rakennustyyppi on kehittynyt Pohjois-Suomessa ja -Ruotsissa, jossa kesähyönteisten kiusa on suurin. Karjarakennustyypin tunnusmerkkinä on pyramidinmuotoinen katto.

Navettoja on säilynyt Pohjois-Pohjanmaalla mm. Iissä Jokikylän Haltun talossa, Pudasjärvellä Mannilassa, Kuusamossa Maaselän kylän Salmelassa ja Jokilamminkylässä Jokelan sekä Ronkaisen tiloilla ja myös Yli-Iissä Haapaniemessä ja Hirvelässä.

Pyramidikattoisia kesänavettoja rakennetaan edelleen. Navettojen rakenne on pysynyt vanhan tradition mukaisena.

The unique building type of the pyramid-roofed summer cowshed developed in Northern Finland and Northern Sweden, where the nuisance of summer insects is greatest. The defining feature of the livestock building type is its pyramid-shaped roof.

The structure and form of a cowshed built for summer use have been developed to protect livestock from insects. The heat of the livestock brought into the shelter for the night causes a strong air current in the small building, and through the ventilation shaft in the middle of the pyramid-shaped roof the insects are drawn out. A square or round body and a conical roof help create a strong draught.

Cowsheds have survived in North Ostrobothnia, for example at the Haltu farm in Jokikylä village in Ii, at Mannila in Pudasjärvi, at Salmela in Maaselkä village in Kuusamo, at the Jokela and Ronkainen farms in Jokilamminkylä, and also at Haapaniemi and Hirvelä in Yli-Ii.

Pyramid-roofed summer cowsheds are still being built. The structure of the cowsheds has remained in accordance with the old tradition.
