The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Luumäen puinen empirekirkko edustaa Intendentinkonttorin suunnittelua. Kirkko muodostaa maisemallisen kiinnekohdan näkyen laajalle yli ympäröivän viljelymaiseman.

Luumäen kirkko sijaitsee mäen harjanteella tovin matkaa Taavetista itään. Sisäviisteisessä ristikirkossa on ristikeskuksesta kahdeksankulmaisen sileän attikaosan yläpuolella kohoava, pieneen lanterniiniin päättyvä kupoli. Kirkkosalissa ristikeskusta hallitsevan kupolin attikaosa on poikkeuksellisen korkea.

Ns. Saksalan hautausmaalla kirkkoaukion laidassa on sankarihaudat.

Kellotapuli valmistui 1876.

Kirkon nykyasu ulko- ja sisälaudoituksineen on 1911 tehdystä, arkkitehti Ilmari Launiksen suunnittelemasta korjauksesta. Sakariston päällä alttarilaitteen takana ollut lehteri laudoitettiin umpeen. Kirkkoa korjattiin 1971 arkkitehti Ensio Louhiluodon johdolla.

Luumäki's wooden Empire-style church represents the designs of the Intendentinkonttori. The church forms a landscape focal point, visible far across the surrounding farmland.

Luumäki church stands on a hill ridge a short distance east of Taavetti. In the internally chamfered cross church, above the octagonal smooth attic section that rises from the crossing, is a dome ending in a small lantern. In the nave, the attic section of the dome that dominates the crossing is exceptionally high. An interesting detail is the neo-Gothic band of quatrefoil or diagonal-lattice pattern running below the roof cornices, both outside and inside.

The church's 25-stop organ of 1908 (Bror Axel Thulé) is among the few organs in our country to have survived unchanged in both mechanism and specification.

A stone wall encloses a round park around the church. The road up to the church hill rises between the cemeteries. In the so-called Saksala cemetery, on the edge of the church square, are the heroes' graves. The first church of the parish was also located in this area. Next to it, in the so-called old cemetery, are the site of the parish's earlier church, the grave of President P.E. Svinhufvud, and the lion-motif memorial to the Civil War of 1918.

Luumäki was established as a chapelry of Lappee in the 1630s and as an independent parish in 1642. The church before the present one, built in the first half of the 18th century, and the bell tower built in 1781, were destroyed in a fire in 1839.

The parish had already obtained drawings for a new church in 1831, because the church built at the beginning of the 1730s had proved too small and in poor condition. The drawing prepared by Anders Fredrik Granstedt, conductor of the Intendentinkonttori, was completed and approved in 1833. It follows exactly the Alajärvi church drawn by architect C.L. Engel in 1824. The decision to build was delayed for a long time by a dispute over the site of the new church. The candidate sites for the church were the site of the previous church and Taavetti. Only after the church and bell tower in the parish's use had been destroyed by a lightning strike was construction of the new church begun, in 1843. The church was consecrated in September 1845. The bell tower was completed in 1876.

The church's present appearance, with its exterior and interior boarding, dates from the 1911 renovation designed by architect Ilmari Launis. The gallery that had been above the sacristy, behind the altar fittings, was boarded over. The church was renovated in 1971 under the direction of architect Ensio Louhiluoto.
