Kuvaus
Karstulan vanhan kirkonkylän kulttuurihistoriallisesti tärkein kokonaisuus on kirkko ympäristöineen, kirkkoa sivuava keskusraitti sekä näiden ympäristöön 1800-luvun lopulta alkaen rakentunut taajama asuin- ja liiketaloineen.
Karstulan hirrestä rakennettu kirkko on valmistunut 1853. Kirkon kookkaaseen kuutiomaiseen keskitilaan liittyvät keskitilan kattolistan alapuolelle jäävät eteishuonemaiset ristivarret. Kirkon keskellä on neliskulmainen, ikkunoilla varustettu lanterniinikupoli.
Karstulan suojeluskuntatalo Suoja on 1930-luvulta.
Historia

Description
The culturally most important ensemble of the old church village of Karstula comprises the church with its surroundings, the central street running alongside the church, and the built-up area of residential and commercial buildings that developed around these from the end of the 19th century.
The log church of Karstula was completed in 1853. Attached to the large, cube-shaped central space of the church are transept arms of the vestibule-room type, which lie below the cornice line of the central space. In the middle of the church is a square lantern cupola with windows. The church hall is exceptionally high and its central space is quite impressive. The altarpiece "Christ Speaking to the People at the Lake of Genesaret" was painted by Pekka Halonen in 1905. The bell tower was originally built in 1815, and was raised and thoroughly renovated in 1861 under the direction of building master Henrik Kuorikoski. South of the church are, among others, the war memorials and burial grounds.
The church village of Karstula lies on the isthmus between the lakes Pääjärvi, Mustalampi and Päällinjärvi. Approaching from the south, the church landscape opens up behind the buildings of the Korpela farm and a strip of field. The area shows the stages in the development of the church village: from the 19th century there are, among others, the church with its surroundings and farm buildings, while the shop and residential houses on the central street and in its vicinity are later. The Karstula Civil Guard house Suoja dates from the 1930s.
History
Karstula was formed as a chapel parish under Saarijärvi in 1775, and it became an independent parish in 1858.
The church, which represents the type of the post-Engel Empire period, was built in 1853 under the direction of master builder Jaakko Kuorikoski, according to drawings made in 1844 at the Intendentinkonttori. In the 1904 repair carried out to the plans of architect Josef Stenbäck, a semicircular gallery level was built in the church nave, which had a square ground plan. It was in turn removed in the repair carried out by architect Kauno S. Kallio in 1953. Artist Ilmari Wirkkala drew the memorial to the Civil War in 1922, and architects Irma and Matti Aaltonen designed the heroes' grave area of the recent wars, with its hero statue, in 1957.
In the vicinity of the church and the farmhouses that had stood nearby, thanks to the freeing of land trade in 1859 and the liberalisation of business activity in the 1870s, the first shops gradually began to appear at the end of the 19th century. They initially operated in old residential buildings, but later residential and commercial buildings were built along the central street.
