The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Merikarvianjoen alajuoksulle rakentunut Alakylä on sijainniltaan ja elinkeinoiltaan tyypillinen rannikon satakuntalaiskylä. Keskiajalla merenrannalle perustettu kylä on jäänyt maankohoamisen seurauksena kauaksi nykyisestä rantaviivasta.

Merikarvian kirkonkylän eli Ylikylän eteläpuolella on keskiajalla syntynyt Alakylä. Useassa kylän talossa on Pohjois-Satakunnalle tyypilliset, erittäin koristeelliset lasikuistit. Erityisen monimuotoinen koristelu on nähtävissä Kungsbackan tilan päärakennuksen kuistissa.

Alakylän (ent. Alakarvian kylä) asutus on syntynyt 1300-luvun alussa.

Alakylä, built on the lower reaches of the Merikarvianjoki, is typical of Satakunta coastal villages in its location and economy. The village, founded in the Middle Ages on the seashore, has, as a result of land uplift, been left far from the present shoreline.

South of the church village of Merikarvia, i.e. Ylikylä, Alakylä arose in the Middle Ages. Its village centre is strip-like along the Merikarvianjoki and the old Pori road. The fields bounded and divided by rocky ridges are former seabed. Along the village street are numerous main buildings and outbuildings of farms dating from the 19th century. Many farms in the village have glazed verandas typical of North Satakunta, which are very decorative. Particularly varied ornamentation can be seen on the veranda of the main building of Kungsbacka farm.

The settlement of Alakylä (formerly Alakarvia village) arose in the early 14th century. In the early modern period, in the village of Merikarvia (Sastmola), formed from Stupila, Yläkylä and Alakylä, there were 15 farms. The three farms of Alakylä separated to form their own village in the 16th century, when they were located south of the mouth of the Merikarvianjoki, on the seashore sheltered by islands. A reference to the village's harbour is found in the name Kuggi, that of one of the village's oldest farms. As a result of land uplift, at the end of the 18th century the harbour of Alakylä moved from the village closer to the sea, to Kuuskeri.

The village's prosperity was based largely on forestry, the income from farmers' sawmills, shipbuilding and sailing.
