The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Vilppulan asema on edustava ja hyvin säilynyt Vaasan radan IV luokan tyyppipiirustusten mukaan toteutettu asemarakennus. Asema on historiallisesti tärkeä vuoden 1918 sodan näyttämönä. Vilppulan ratavartijan talo on harvinainen esimerkki vahtitupien arkkitehtuurin muutoksista. Kolhon V luokan asemaan (pysäkkiin) liittyy myös henkilöhistoriallista merkitystä: Kolho on ikuistettu tyypillisenä suomalaisena asemarakennuksena taiteilija Eero Järnefeltin kuvituksena Juhani Ahon klassikkoon Rautatie.

Pihapiirissä on vahtitupaan kuuluneita talousrakennuksia.

Kolhon Tampere-Vaasa -radan V luokan asema-alue sijaitsee maisemallisesti upealla paikalla Ukonselän ja Kaijanselän välisellä kannaksella. Asema-alueen rakennukset ovat valmistuneet 1881-1883. Kolhon asema-alueelta on purettu useita rakennuksia; mm. kaksoisvahtitupa 1880-luvulta on siirretty toisaalle Kolhoon. Purkutöistä huolimatta jäljellä olevat, hyvin alkuperäisen asunsa säilyttäneet rakennukset muodostavat erittäin edustavan asema-alueen, johon kuuluu asemarakennuksen lisäksi talousrakennuksia ja tavaramakasiini. Ratapihan itäpuolella on Metsäliiton kyllästämö.

Tampere-Vaasa-rata valmistui 1883. Samana vuonna valmistui myös Vilppulan asema IV luokan aseman tyyppipiirustuksilla. Vilppulan asemalta Mänttään G.A. Serlachiuksen puuhiomolle avattiin 1896 8 km pitkä kapearaiteinen rata. Vilppulan satamarata sekä laivaliikenneyhteys Tampereelle avattiin 1905-07. Rautatie vilkastutti aiempaa maatalouspitäjää, jonne perustettiin useita sahoja ja mm. Bonnäsin terva- ja tärpättitehdas (per. 1902).

Rautatien kuvitettu laitos ilmestyi 1892.

The Vilppula station is a representative and well-preserved station building, built to the Class IV standard drawings of the Vaasa Railway. The station is historically important as the scene of the 1918 Civil War. The Vilppula railway guardhouse is a rare example of changes in guardhouse architecture. The Kolho Class V station (halt) also has personal historical significance: Kolho has been immortalised as a typical Finnish station building in artist Eero Järnefelt's illustrations for Juhani Aho's classic Rautatie.

The Class IV rural station building in Vilppula is in the form of the extension designed by architect Bruno Granholm and completed in 1903. In addition to the station building, the station area has an office and a goods storehouse from the 1880s, and a sauna. South of the station area in the centre, in a scenically fine location between the road and the railway on the edge of Vilppulankoski, is the Vilppula railway guardhouse. The simple guardhouse was originally built to 1880s standard drawings, but its exterior was altered to a contemporary form in the 1920s. The yard contains outbuildings that belonged to the guardhouse.

The Class V station area of the Kolho section of the Tampere-Vaasa line lies in a scenically superb location on the isthmus between Ukonselkä and Kaijanselkä. The buildings of the station area were completed in 1881-1883. Several buildings have been demolished from the Kolho station area; among others, the double guardhouse from the 1880s has been moved elsewhere in Kolho. Despite the demolitions, the remaining buildings, which have kept their original appearance well, form a very representative station area, including the station building, outbuildings and goods storehouse. On the east side of the yard there is the Metsäliitto impregnation plant.

The Tampere-Vaasa railway was completed in 1883. In the same year the Vilppula station was also completed, to the Class IV station standard drawings. From Vilppula station, an 8 km long narrow-gauge line to G.A. Serlachius's wood grinding mill in Mänttä was opened in 1896. The Vilppula harbour line and the shipping connection to Tampere were opened in 1905-07. The railway enlivened the formerly agrarian parish, where several sawmills were established, and among others the Bonnäs tar and turpentine factory (est. 1902). As the central place of White Finland, Vilppula was an important station site in the 1918 Civil War, and one of the fiercest battles was fought in Vilppula in March 1918. The significance of Vilppula station began to decline in the 1970s, when the Parkano line and the Jyväskylä-Jämsänkoski line were completed.

Several sawmills were in Kolho at the end of the 19th century, and before the cross line extending to Jyväskylä was completed (1897), there was busy inland waterway traffic across Keurusselkä between Keuruu parish village and Kolho. Kolho station was built in 1883, and at the same time a double guardhouse, a goods storehouse and outbuildings were completed. Later, two more double guardhouses (1897 and 1928) and an outbuilding related to them (1897) were completed. In Kolho, Eero Järnefelt made illustrations for his friend Juhani Aho's work Rautatie, published in 1885, when the Järnefelt artist family spent their summer in 1889 near Kolho station, on the other side of Kolhonsalmi, at the house of timber merchant Malmi. All the models for the figures in Järnefelt's illustrations were people from the Kolho station area, many from Kolho farm. The illustrated edition of Rautatie was published in 1892.
