The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Hämeen entisiin erämaihin Näsijärven pohjoisen järvireitin varrelle syntyneen historiallisen Ruoveden emäseurakunnan rakennushistoriallisesti merkittävä kirkko ja harjun rinteessä sijaitseva raittimainen kirkonkylä rakennuksineen on poikkeuksellisen hyvin säilynyt yhtenäinen kokonaisuus.

Ruoveden kirkonkylän maisema rajautuu Ruoveteen ja peltojen kehystämään Pappilanlahteen. Kirkonkylän halki kulkeva harju on määritellyt tiestön linjauksen ja asutuksen sijainnin. Kirkonkylän halki kulkeva tie on alkuaan 1600-luvulla perustettu Pohjanmaan tie, jota avautuu näkymä pienen peltoaukean takana sijaitsevalle 1700-luvun puiselle ristikirkolle. Kirkon ympärillä on säilynyt avoin maisematila. Kirkkomaisemaan liittyy kirkonkylän kansakoulujen näyttävät rakennukset. Maantien lisäksi toinen lähestymissuunta on ollut laaja vesistö, jonka merkityksestä kertovat ranta-alueelle sijoitettu kirkko ja lähellä oleva laivalaituri.

Rakennusteknisesti taidokas ja tilallisesti keskitetty kaksikymmentäneljäkulmainen ristikirkko kuuluu 1700-luvun puurakentamisen huippusaavutuksiin. Kirkko on sekä sisä- että ulkoviisteinen ristikirkko. Ristivarsien päissä ovat matalat eteishuoneet, myöhemmin rakennettu kookas sakaristo on itäpäädyssä. Kirkossa on jyrkkälappeinen korkea aumakatto, jonka keskustasta kohoaa sipulipäätteinen lanterniini. Alkuperäisestä laajennetut ikkunat jäsentävät vaakalaudoitettua julkisivua. Kirkkosalissa on ristivarsissa kaarevat tynnyriholvit ja ristikeskuksessa kahdeksankulmainen tasalakinen välikattokupoli. Kirkon alkuperäinen sisustus ei ole säilynyt. Kellotapuli on alkuaan rakennettu rakennusmestari Mikael Piimäsen johdolla 1772 ja siirretty nykyiselle paikalleen 1785 Åkerblomin oppipojan, rakennusmestari Matti Åkergrenin johdolla. Kirkkotarhassa on lukuisia vanhojen ruoveteläissukujen hautamerkkejä ja Pekkalan kartanon puinen hautakappeli. Arkkitehti Oiva Kallion 1922 suunnittelema aumakattoinen siunauskappeli on valmistunut rakennusmestari Heikki Tiitolan johdolla 1928.

Ritoniemen kartanon omaperäistä arkkitehtuuria edustavat rakennukset sijaitsevat kirkolle erkanevan tien risteyksessä. J.L. Runeberg oli kotiopettajana Ritoniemen kartanossa ja tältä ajalta on peräisin joukko Vänrikki Stoolin tarinoiden runoluonnoksia. Pappilanlahden maisemassa sijaitseva lähde on saanut nimensä kansallisrunoilijan mukaan. Ritoniemen kartanon rakennuttama kivinen lainamakasiini ja puinen pitäjänmakasiini ovat vastapäätä kunnantaloa kirkonkylän raitin varrella. Raitin tarjoamaa ryhdikästä sijoittelua noudattaa niin vanha kuin uudempikin rakennuskanta, paria raittilinjasta sisäänvedettyä uudempaa rakennusta lukuun ottamatta.

Vanhimmat palvelun rakennukset, kaupat ja hotelli sekä kunnan toimitilat kuten Heikki Tiitolan suunnittelema kunnantalo muodostavat keskusraitin harjun puoleiselle laidalle yhtenäisen, tielinjaan kiinnittyvän rivistön, joka päättyy kunnansairaalan rakennuksiin. Rivistön uusinta rakennuskantaa edustava kaupparakennus keltaiseksi maalattuine lautaverhouksineen on suuresta koostaan huolimatta saatu sopimaan kyläkuvaan varsin onnistuneesti. Raittirakennusten takana harjulla on samansuuntainen rivi lehtevän puuston ympäröimiä asuinrakennuksia. Kotiseutumuseon runsasrakennuksinen alue sijaitsee harjun laella.

Pirkkalasta omaksi seurakunnaksi 1500-luvun jälkipuoliskolla erotetun Ruoveden seurakunnan edellinen 1654 valmistunut kirkko purettiin nykyisen valmistuttua.

Kunnantalo rakennettiin 1915. Kotiseutumuseo perustettiin 1932.

The architecturally significant church of the historic mother parish of Ruovesi, which arose in the former wilderness of Häme along the northern lake route of Näsijärvi, and the church village on the esker slope, a street-like settlement with its buildings, form an exceptionally well-preserved, unified whole.

The landscape of the Ruovesi church village is bounded by Ruovesi lake and by Pappilanlahti, framed by fields. The esker running through the church village has determined the alignment of the road and the location of the settlement. The road running through the church village, originally established in the 17th century as the Ostrobothnian road, offers a view of the 18th-century wooden cruciform church, located behind a small field clearing. The open landscape around the church has been preserved. The church landscape is linked to the impressive buildings of the village's elementary schools. In addition to the main road, the other approach has been the extensive waterway, whose significance is shown by the church located on the shore and the nearby jetty.

The technically skilled and spatially concentrated twenty-four-sided cruciform church belongs to the peak achievements of 18th-century timber construction. The church is both internally and externally chamfered. At the ends of the cross arms are low vestibules, and the large sacristy, built later, is at the east end. The church has a high, steep-pitched hip roof, from whose centre rises an onion-topped lantern. The windows, enlarged from the original, articulate the horizontally boarded façade. In the nave, the cross arms have curved barrel vaults and the crossing has an octagonal flat-ceilinged intermediate dome. The church's original interior has not survived. The bell tower was originally built under master builder Mikael Piimänen in 1772 and moved to its present location in 1785 under master builder Matti Åkergren, Åkerblom's apprentice. The churchyard contains numerous gravestones of old Ruovesi families and the wooden burial chapel of Pekkala manor. The hip-roofed blessing chapel designed by architect Oiva Kallio in 1922 was completed in 1928 under the direction of master builder Heikki Tiitola.

The buildings representing the distinctive architecture of Ritoniemi manor are situated at the junction of the road branching off to the church. J.L. Runeberg was a home tutor at Ritoniemi manor, and from this period come a number of poem drafts for Vänrikki Stool's Tales. The spring located in the Pappilanlahti landscape has been named after the national poet. The stone loan storehouse built by Ritoniemi manor and the wooden parish storehouse are opposite the municipal hall, along the village's main street. The street's orderly layout is followed by both old and newer building stock, except for a couple of newer buildings set back from the street line.

The oldest service buildings, shops and hotel, as well as municipal premises such as the municipal hall designed by Heikki Tiitola, form a unified row along the esker side of the main street, attached to the road line and ending in the buildings of the municipal hospital. The shop building with its yellow-painted board cladding, representing the newest building stock in the row, has, despite its large size, been fitted quite successfully into the village scene. Behind the street buildings, on the esker, runs a parallel row of residential buildings surrounded by leafy trees. The richly built area of the local heritage museum is located on the top of the esker.

The previous church of the Ruovesi parish, which had been separated from Pirkkala as an independent parish in the second half of the 16th century, was completed in 1654 and was demolished after the present church was completed. The church was built in 1777-1778 under the direction of master builder Matti Åkerblom. The church interior was boarded according to the plan of Josef Stenbäck in the repairs carried out in 1904-1905, when the pews were also renewed. The tongue-and-groove boarding of the vault was removed in the church's most recent repair, carried out under architect Heikki Elomaa in 1977-1978.

The church village of Ruovesi was formed on the lands of Ritoniemi manor. The main building of Ritoniemi manor was completed in the first half of the 19th century. It was extended, and its wing sections were raised to two storeys in 1852. The loan storehouses built by the manor and the parish were completed in the mid-19th century. The first elementary school of the Ruovesi church village was completed in 1869, and the present one in 1871. The municipal hall was built in 1915. The local heritage museum was founded in 1932.
