Kuvaus
Uitonsalmen molemmille rannoille levinneessä Sulkavan kirkonkylässä on kirkkomaiseman ohella kulttuurihistoriallisesti merkittävintä Alanteentien kaupparakennusten rivi, joka liittyy kirkonkylän 1900-luvun alkupuolella tapahtuneeseen kehitykseen.
Uitonsalmen rakentamaton ranta muodostaa puistomaisen suojavyöhykkeen kirkon maisemalle. Tiittalan kartano kuuluu maisemallisesti Uitonsalmen kokonaisuuteen. Päärakennus on osittain kaksikerroksinen empiretyylinen keskeissalirakennus, jossa on leveä poikkipääty. Päärakennukseen liittyy talousrakennuksia ja puisto.
Sulkavan pitäjänhallinnon ja kaupan keskus on muodostunut 1800-luvun lopulla Uitonsalmen etelärannalle. Salmen rantaa seuraavan Alanteentien varrella on tuosta vaiheesta säilynyt kirkonkylien 1900-luvun alussa vallinnutta rakennustapaa oivallisesti kuvastava rivistö rakennusvolyymiltään yhtenäisiä rakennuksia, joista useimmissa on alkuaan toiminut kauppaliikkeitä ja mm. meijeri.
Historia
Uitonvirta on kapeimmillaan kirkon kohdalla ja se on saanut nimensä vanhan hevosten yliuittopaikan mukaan.
Sulkavan seurakunta on entinen Idänlahti-niminen Säämingin kappeli. Omaksi seurakunnaksi Sulkava itsenäistyi 1630.
Kirkon suunnitteli Charles Bassi ja sen rakensi Matti Salonen 1822. Rakenteellisten heikkouksien vuoksi kirkkoa muutettiin 1853 korottamalla keskiosaa ja kulmaulokkeita. Uudet piirustukset laativat E. Lohrman ja A.E. Granstedt. Rakennustyöstä vastasi J. Tolpo. Kirkon nykyinen sisäasu on 1960-luvulta. Kellotapulin rakensi hollolalainen Matti Petrell 1770. Kaksi ylintä kerrosta muutetiin kahdeksankulmaiseksi 1847 Taavetti Rahikaisen johdolla. Hautakammio on rakennettu vanhan kirkon hirsistä 1753 ensimmäisen kirkon paikalle.
Tiittalan ratsutilan päärakennus rakennettiin 1830-luvulla C.L.Engelin laatiman suunnitelman mukaan.

Description
In the Sulkava church village, which spreads along both banks of the Uitonsalmi, the most culturally significant feature alongside the church landscape is the row of commercial buildings on Alanteentie, which is associated with developments in the church village in the first half of the 20th century.
The administrative and commercial centre of Sulkava has grown on the southern bank of the river, and the church-side area of Uitonvirta represents the oldest phase of development of the church village. Parts of the historic village structure are the double-cross church built in 1822, concentrated along the road, the churchyard with its bell tower and burial chambers, the old municipal hall, the pitäjäntupa, and a residential building located opposite the church. The undeveloped shore of Uitonsalmi forms a park-like protective zone for the church's setting. Tiittala manor is part of the Uitonsalmi landscape as a whole. The main building is partly two-storeyed, an Empire-style central-hall building with a wide transverse gable end. The main building is accompanied by outbuildings and a park.
The centre of Sulkava parish administration and commerce took shape at the end of the 19th century on the southern shore of Uitonsalmi. Along Alanteentie, which follows the shore of the salmi, a row of buildings of uniform massing has survived from this phase, admirably illustrating the building tradition prevalent in church villages in the early 20th century. Most of these buildings originally housed shops, including a dairy.
History
The Uitonvirta is at its narrowest at the church, and it takes its name from an old horse-swimming crossing place.
The Sulkava parish was formerly the Sääminki chapel named Idänlahti. Sulkava became an independent parish in 1630.
The church was designed by Charles Bassi and built by Matti Salonen in 1822. Because of structural weaknesses, the church was altered in 1853 by raising the central section and the corner projections. New drawings were prepared by E. Lohrman and A.E. Granstedt. The construction work was overseen by J. Tolpo. The church's present interior dates from the 1960s. The bell tower was built in 1770 by Matti Petrell of Hollola. The two uppermost storeys were altered to an octagonal form in 1847 under the direction of Taavetti Rahikainen. The burial chamber was built in 1753 from the logs of the old church, on the site of the first church.
The main building of the Tiittala horse farm was built in the 1830s to a plan drawn up by C.L.Engel.
