The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Tonteista osa on rintamamiestontteja. Kauppilanmäen eteläpuolelle 1948 kaavoitettu Yrjölä on säilynyt yhtenäinen tyyppitaloalue 1940-1950-luvulta.

Tallinmäki on Yhtyneiden Paperitehtaiden vanhin omakotitaloalue Valkeakoskella. Tallinmäen itäosassa Ulvajankadulla sijaitsevat Säteri Oy:n työsuhdeasuinnoiksi suunnitellut ns. "Alppitalot" ja kaksi mestarien rivitaloa.

Kirjasniemi on Säteri Oy:n toimihenkilöiden asuntoalue, jossa tehtaan johtajiston ja insinöörien yksikerroksiset, aumakattoiset asuinrakennukset ovat tehtaan läheisyydessä Mallasveteen pistävän niemen kärjessä. Naisvirkailijoiden asuntola, kaksikerroksinen Kirjaslinna, on sijoitettu kauemmas rannasta maaston korkeimmalle kohdalle.

Vanha paperitehdas rakennettiin monessa eri vaiheessa; vanhin osa valmistui 1880-luvulla. Koskimaisemalle tunnusomainen torni rakennettiin 1901-1905 uudelleenrakennusvaiheessa.

Yhtyneiden Paperitehtaiden asemakaava-arkkitehti Heimo Kautonen laati kaavoja aina 1960-luvun alkuun saakka.

Uusi sulkukanava rakennettiin 1950-1955 vanhan kaksisulkuisen kanavan eteläpuolelle. Kanavan yhteyteen valmistui voimalaitos 1952. Valkeakosken kaupungintalo nousi koskirannalle 1956 (R.V. Luukkonen).

Kokonaisuuteen olennaisesti kuulunut hyppytorni on myöhemmin tuhoutunut.

The Valkeakoski factories and the extensive housing areas associated with them, as well as several public buildings, illustrate in an exemplary way how the built-up area grew in connection with industry and the waterway. The complex, built in layers from the early 20th century up to the 1960s, tells in a comprehensive way of the development of industrial and residential construction. Large-scale industry, still in operation, forms a prominent element in the forest and waterway landscape.

The wood-processing industry sites of Valkeakoski are at Myllysaari and Tervasaari. Myllysaari is associated with the historic canal setting, where the red-brick production buildings and the former canal kasööri's house near the old canal channel form a significant ensemble together with the new lock canal, the power station and the town hall, all completed in the 1950s. The most architecturally notable parts of the Tervasaari factory area are the red-brick paper mill and office built in the 1930s.

The man-made fibre factory of Säteri Oy, built mainly by 1945 and already extended in the 1950s, rises on the shore of Mallasvesi. On the edge of the red-brick factory area is an office building, whose glass wall on the main facade lets light into the entrance hall. The buildings of the Säteri factory, as well as the factory housing areas, were designed by architects Martta Martikainen-Ypy and Ragnar Ypy.

The Valkeakoski industrial plants are associated with high-quality housing areas of industry and of the Valkeakoski market town. The factory companies' housing areas are mainly on the north shore of Valkeakoski. On the south shore are the housing areas built mainly on the former market-town area: Haka-alue, Kauppilanmäki and Yrjölä. The distinctive Haka-alue, the oldest small-house area in Valkeakoski, consists of houses built in the 1930s and 1940s with steep-pitched saddle roofs. The oldest building stock of Kauppilanmäki, right on the shore of Vanajavesi, consists of five buildings for officials built in 1935-1939 on Lempääläntie and Niementie, designed by architect W.G. Palmqvist and master builder Esko Aro. Some of the plots are front-line veterans' plots. Yrjölä, planned in 1948 on the south side of Kauppilanmäki, has preserved a uniform type-house area from the 1940s to the 1950s. The area consists of two-family houses which, together with their outbuildings, have survived in their original form.

Tallinmäki is the oldest single-family house area of Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat in Valkeakoski. In the eastern part of Tallinmäki, on Ulvajankatu, are the so-called "Alppitalot", designed as company housing for Säteri Oy, and two terraced houses for foremen.

Kirjasniemi is a white-collar housing area for Säteri Oy, where the single-storey, hip-roofed residential buildings of the factory management and engineers are located near the factory, at the tip of a headland jutting into Mallasvesi. The women clerks' hostel, the two-storey Kirjaslinna, is placed farther from the shore, at the highest point of the terrain. In Ulvajanniemi, planned in 1946 at the same time as Kirjasniemi, there are single-family houses built by Säteri Oy for its workers, representing three different house types, as well as three residential apartment blocks. The three small-house types of Ulvajanniemi are by Ragnar Ypy, and the apartment blocks are the work of the architectural office Ypy-Martikainen-Malmio.

Roukonperä is a housing area planned by Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat in the 1950s behind Roukonsuo, north of the factories and the earlier housing areas. In Roukonperä, construction was carried out uniformly to a house type designed by Esko Aro, as was the adjacent Mäntylä housing area built in the 1960s.

The steep-roofed parish church of Valkeakoski, completed in 1969, and its tall, slender bell tower, have a beautiful location near the water channel between Mallasvesi and Vanajavesi. The school building group next to the church includes, among others, the Apia school built between 1937 and 1967 (demolished after 2009), and a school building now used by an adult education centre. The water landscape of Valkeakoski also includes, on the north-east side of the lock canal, the Apia open canal with its suspension bridges, and the Kirjaslampi swimming facility.

The wood-processing industry of Valkeakoski began at Myllysaari in 1873, when a wood-grinding mill and a paper factory were established on the old mill site formed by the rapids between Mallasvesi and Vanajavesi. In addition to waterpower, the site offered transport links, as the Valkeakoski canal and the Apia open canal had been built in 1866-1869 to connect the Vanajavesi and Längelmävesi areas.

The old paper factory was built in several stages; the oldest part was completed in the 1880s. The tower, characteristic of the rapids landscape, was built in 1901-1905 during a rebuilding phase. The repair workshop was completed in 1902 and 1906, and the Sorri grinding shop in 1907. Industrial activity ended at Myllysaari in the final years of the 1960s. The Jylhävaara machine workshop and bolt factory, established by the company in 1940, was then moved from Myllysaari to new premises.

Cellulose production started at the Valkeakoski factories at Tervasaari around the turn of 1880 and 1881, where in 1886 the company switched to the sulphate cooking process, the first in Finland. The sulphite factory started in 1908. Production gradually concentrated at Tervasaari. The Tervasaari factory was extensively extended and renovated up to recent years, and the older building phases from the early 20th century have survived only in part. The paper factory and office were built in 1936-1938 to designs by architect W.G. Palmqvist.

After the Interim Peace Treaty of 1940, Säteri Oy, established in Valkeakoski, replaced Kuitu Oy, a producer of man-made fibres for the textile industry which had been located in Jääski and had been left behind the border. Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat Oy subscribed 15% of the share capital and became the company's largest private shareholder. The company also donated a 32-hectare land area on the shore of Mallasvesi to the man-made fibre factory. Construction began in 1941, and production of man-made fibre made from bleached cellulose started in 1943.

The companies built many housing units for their workers. They also assisted their employees by granting building loans and by supporting their own type-house construction projects. Housing areas were planned in a uniform way from the 1930s onwards. Heimo Kautonen, town-plan architect of Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat, drew up plans up until the early 1960s.

A new lock canal was built in 1950-1955 on the south side of the old two-lock canal. A power station was completed alongside the canal in 1952. The Valkeakoski town hall rose on the rapids shore in 1956 (R.V. Luukkonen). The old canal was filled in along almost its entire length in 1957-1960 to become an extension area for the Tervasaari factory. The Apia open canal was restored in 1938, and in 1957 it was widened by a further eight metres. The suspension bridges associated with the Apia canal setting were completed in 1963.

The Kirjaslampi swimming facility was built jointly by Yhtyneet Paperitehtaat and Säteri. The diving tower and the concrete structures bordering the pool were completed in 1946, and the open grandstand containing changing rooms and a refreshment kiosk in 1949. The diving tower, which was an essential part of the ensemble, was later destroyed.
