Kuvaus
Suuri postitie on keskiajalla kehittynyt ja 1630-luvulla Suomen ensimmäisenä postitienä avattu Tukholmasta Turkuun johtava historiallinen tieyhteys. Postitien avaaminen liittyy Ruotsin valtakunnan keskushallinnon kehittämiseen suurvaltakaudella.
Tukholmasta lähtevän Suuren postitien reitti kulkee Suomen puolella Kustavin Etelä-Vartsalan kylän satamasta kauniisti maastoon sovitettuna kohti Taivassaloa ja sieltä yhteensä 110 kilometrin matkan Turkuun Vehmaan, Mynämäen, Maskun ja Raision keskiaikaisten kirkkojen kautta. Parhaiten postitie on säilynyt Kustavin Etelä-Vartsalassa, jonka Posti on ollut postitalona aina tien perustamisesta 1840-luvulle saakka, Taivassalon Tylpännimen laiturin ja Helsinginrannan välisellä taipaleella ja Vehmaan Laukkapellossa.
Historia

Description
Suuri postitie is a historical road link from Tukholma to Turku that developed in the Middle Ages and was opened in the 1630s as Finland's first post road. The opening of the post road is connected with the development of the central administration of the Swedish realm in the Great Power era.
On the Finnish side, the route of the Suuri postitie leaving Tukholma runs from the harbour of Etelä-Vartsala village in Kustavi, beautifully fitted to the terrain, towards Taivassalo, and from there a total distance of 110 kilometres to Turku via the medieval churches of Vehmaa, Mynämäki, Masku and Raisio. The road has survived best in Etelä-Vartsala in Kustavi, where Posti served as a post house from the time the road was established until the 1840s, on the stretch between the Tylpännimi jetty and Helsinginranta in Taivassalo, and at Laukkapelto in Vehmaa.
History
The route known as Suuri postitie was evidently in use already from the 14th century. The earliest written references to the later post road date from the early 16th century, and toward the end of that century the road was in heavy military use.
Sweden's first postal regulations governing the conveyance of post were issued during the reign of Queen Kristiina in 1636, and on the Finnish side the carriage of post was organised during the governor-generalship of Pehr Brahe. Finland's first postal line opened on the road in 1638. The line was defined by making use of existing routes to Eckerö, Taivassalo and Turku, and onward to Helsinki, Viipuri and Narva. Farmers were obliged to carry the post: in Kustavi the farmers of Pohjois-Vartsala, and in Taivassalo the farmers of Sannainen. Responsibility for conveying the post was transferred to the coaching inns in 1845. Post houses remained in use for sea mail until 1910, when regular shipping between Finland and Sweden began.
The alignment of the Suuri postitie was surveyed in 1988-1989 in cooperation between Varsinais-Suomen seutukaavaliitto, Posti- ja telelaitos, Tielaitos and the municipalities of the area.
