The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Jämsän alueella on useita 1800-luvun alkupuolen vauraasta ja tyylitietoisesta rakentamisesta kertovia asuinrakennuksia. Suurten talonpoikaistilojen uudet päärakennukset tai pihapiirin laidalle rakennetut syytinkitalot on rakennettu ja uudistettu empiretyylin yksityiskohtia mukaillen.

Rakennukset, joissa monessa on aumakatto, on vuorattu ajanmukaisella vaakavuorauksella.

In the Jämsä area there are several residential buildings that tell of prosperous and style-conscious building in the early 19th century. The new main buildings of large farmsteads, and the syytinkitalot built at the edge of the courtyard, were built and renovated following Empire-style details.

The buildings, many of which have hipped roofs, are clad in up-to-date horizontal cladding. Decorative elements include corner pilasters, stylised Ionic pilasters, profiled window mouldings and sometimes painted fascia boards. Characteristic of these buildings are the handsome enclosed porches decorated with paired columns and arched windows.

The best examples of Empire-style houses in Jämsä are Ruotsula from 1824, Kuikka in the village of Säyrylä from the 1830s, Hinkkala from the 1830s, and the main building of Honkanen, stylistically modified in 1834, and a guest building from the 1840s, at Jämsänkoski.

According to tradition, the builders working in Jämsä in summer were carpenters who came to the locality from Ostrobothnia, along with local men who had trained in the Turku joiners' guild. The Empire colours used in the exterior painting were obtained through Fredrik Wilhelm Römani, a painter from Jämsä who had been at a painting school in Turku.

The Jämsänjokilaakso valley was known as the granary of Central Finland, which, together with the forests and the mills and sawmills established on the rapids, guaranteed prosperity for the area, visible in its impressive building activity.

Ostrobothnian carpenters built several residential or guest buildings representing peasant Empire style in the Central Finland region from the 1820s to the 1860s. The phenomenon was linked to the transfer of stylistic influences from the coast inland, and on the other hand to the economic recession of Ostrobothnia after the decline of shipbuilding and tar burning, as well as to the beginning of the prosperity of Central Finland, in which the key factors were the region's extensive forests and hydropower resources.
