Kuvaus
Seinäjoen kirkko, seurakuntakeskus, kaupungintalo, kirjasto, teatteri ja virastotalo muodostavat yhden maamme huomattavimmista sodanjälkeisistä kulttuuri- ja hallintokeskuksista. Kokonaisuus kuuluu myös kansainvälisen DOCOMOMO-järjestön hyväksymään suomalaisen modernin arkkitehtuurin merkkiteosten valikoimaan.
Aalto-keskus perustuu arkkitehti Alvar Aallon Seinäjoen kaupungin uuden keskustan ja sen julkisten rakennusten arkkitehtuurikilpailuvoittoon 1959. Aallon hahmottelemat Seinäjoen modernin kaupungin suuntaviivat näkyivät jo 1952 Seinäjoen kirkon, Lakeuden Ristin, suunnittelukilpailussa.
Lakeuden Ristin valkoinen kirkko seurakuntakeskuksineen on osa 1960 perustetun kaupungin hallinto- ja kulttuurikeskusta. Kirkon pohjoispuolella, alueen maamerkkinä kohoaa 65 metrin korkuinen, tyylitellyn ristin muotoinen kellotorni.
Seurakuntakeskus rajaa kirkon pääjulkisivun edustalla olevaa avointa tilaa. Kirkkoon liittyy toiminnallisesti pieni lämpökeskusrakennus vahtimestarin asuntoineen. Myös kirkkopuisto on Aallon suunnittelema.
Kaupungintalo on valmistunut 1962. Tummansinisin posliinisauvoin päällystetyn kaupungintalon pääjulkisivua hallitsee pilarihalli, josta on sisäänkäynti taloon.
Kirjaston viuhkamainen sisätilaratkaisu on avara.
Valkoisen rappauspintaisen rakennuksen tärkein sisätila on käräjäsali.
1987 valmistuneen teatteritalon julkisivu on valkoista
posliinisauvaa. Teatterin lämpiössä on esillä viisi Aallon kuuluisaa puuntaivutustyötä sekä Alvar Aallon ja Aino Aallon suunnittelemien lasien kokoelma, jossa on yli 200 lasitaideteosta.
Kirjaston, teatterin ja kaupungintalon väliin jää graniittikivetty sisäpiha eli Kansalaistori.
Historia
Aalto mainitsi koko Seinäjoen keskustan suunnittelun alkaneen kirkosta. Kirkko, jota voisi kokonsa puolesta nimittää katedraaliksi, määritti tulevien keskustarakennusten koon ja laadun.
Seinäjoen seurakunnan rakentaessa kirkkoa Seinäjoen kauppala alkoi toteuttaa omaa osuuttaan kulttuuri- ja hallintokeskuksesta. Seinäjoen kauppala järjesti kauppalantaloa koskevan suunnittelukilpailun 1958. Kilpailuohjelma edellytti kokonaissuunnitelmaa kauppalantalon tontille, joten kirjasto, valtion virastotalo ja teatteritalo luonnosteltiin samaan aikaan. 1959 järjestetyn jatkokilpailun voitti Alvar Aallon ja Elissa Aallon ehdotus. Seinäjoen kaupungintalon rakennustyö aloitettiin 1961 ja talo valmistui 1962. Rakennuksen B-osan asunnot muutettiin toimistoiksi vuosina 1975 ja 1981.
Kaupunginkirjasto-maakuntakirjasto rakennettiin 1964-65 ja virastotalo 1967-1968 useiden valtion virastojen toimitiloiksi. Kiinteistö siirtyi Seinäjoen kaupungin omistukseen 2003. Alvar Aalto esitti teatteritalon piirustukset jo 1969. Rakennus toteutettiin vasta 1986-87 Elissa Aallon johdolla.
Kaupungintalon ja kirjaston väliin jäävä Kansalaistori sai Aallon jo suunnittelukilpailussa ehdottaman graniittilohkareilla ruudutetun luonnonkivipäällysteen 1988.

Description
Seinäjoki church, parish centre, town hall, library, theatre and office building together form one of the country's most notable post-war cultural and administrative centres. The complex also belongs to the selection of Finnish modern architecture masterpieces accepted by the international DOCOMOMO organisation.
The Aalto-keskus is based on architect Alvar Aalto's winning entry in the 1959 architectural competition for the new centre of Seinäjoki city and its public buildings. The guidelines for a modern city of Seinäjoki outlined by Aalto were already visible in the 1952 design competition for Seinäjoki church, Lakeuden Risti.
The white church of Lakeuden Risti, together with its parish centre, is part of the administrative and cultural centre of the city, founded in 1960. North of the church, a stylised cross-shaped bell tower 65 metres high rises as a landmark of the area.
The church, with 1 200 seats, is slightly wedge-shaped and symmetrical inside. The floor of the chancel, the altar table and rail, and the pulpit are of grey-striped white marble; the pews are made of North Karelian punahonka. The stained-glass window in the toimituskappeli, designed by Aalto, is titled The Rivers of South Ostrobothnia, and the one in the sacristy is titled Source of Life. Aalto has also drawn the communion silver, antependia, and altar and book cloths.
The parish centre frames the open space in front of the church's main façade. The one- and two-storey wing buildings are rendered white and contain various operational premises and flats. A small heating plant building with the caretaker's flat is functionally connected to the church. The church park was also designed by Aalto.
The town hall was completed in 1962. The main façade, clad in dark blue porcelain rods, is dominated by a pillared hall, from which the entrance to the building is reached. The tall, asymmetrical council chamber, which also serves as a concert hall, gives the building its monumental quality. The entrance hall of the council chamber can also be reached from the terraced landings on the south side of the building, which are bordered by flower beds and a fountain.
The white library, completed in 1965, forms the southern boundary of the administrative and cultural centre. The library's fan-shaped interior layout is spacious. The south-facing windows of the building are protected by a window grille.
The state office building was completed in 1968 and bounds the Aalto-keskus at its western end. The most important interior space of the white rendered building is the courtroom.
The theatre building, completed in 1987, has a façade of white porcelain rods. The theatre foyer displays five of Aalto's famous bentwood works and a collection of glass designed by Alvar Aalto and Aino Aalto, containing over 200 glass art works.
Between the library, the theatre and the town hall lies a granite-paved inner courtyard, the Kansalaistori.
History
An architectural competition for the church and parish centre in Seinäjoki was held in 1951. Aalto's proposal exceeded the site area, but the prize jury considered it better than the other proposals and recommended Aalto's plan as the basis for implementation.
Construction began in autumn 1957, and the church was completed in spring 1960. The large parish centre was built in 1964-1966. Some repairs related to improving the acoustics were carried out in the church later. In 1984 a fire destroyed the interior of the sacristy, and the church nave also suffered smoke damage.
Aalto mentioned that the planning of the whole Seinäjoki town centre began with the church. The church, which in its size could be called a cathedral, determined the scale and quality of the buildings that followed in the town centre.
While the Seinäjoki parish was building the church, the market town of Seinäjoki began to implement its own part of the cultural and administrative centre. The market town of Seinäjoki held a design competition for the kauppalantalo in 1958. The competition programme required an overall plan for the kauppalantalo site, so the library, the state office building and the theatre building were sketched at the same time. The follow-up competition held in 1959 was won by the proposal of Alvar Aalto and Elissa Aalto. Construction of the Seinäjoki town hall began in 1961, and the building was completed in 1962. The flats in Part B of the building were converted into offices in 1975 and 1981.
Kaupunginkirjasto-maakuntakirjasto was built in 1964-65, and the office building was built in 1967-1968 as premises for several state agencies. The property passed into the ownership of the city of Seinäjoki in 2003. Alvar Aalto presented the drawings for the theatre building as early as 1969. The building was not realised until 1986-87, under the direction of Elissa Aalto.
The Kansalaistori square between the town hall and the library received in 1988 the natural stone paving, gridded with granite boulders, that Aalto had already proposed in the design competition.
