Kuvaus
Raumankari on yksi tunnetuimmista Pohjanmaan rannikkopitäjien jokisuussa sijaitsevista historiallisista markkinapaikoista. Markkinapaikalle kehittynyt kirkonkylä on säilyttänyt tiiviin rakenteensa ja pienimittakaavaisen rakennuskantansa. Himangan kirkko on tunnetun keskipohjalaisen kirkonrakentajan Jacob Rijfin 1700- ja 1800-luvun taitteessa suunnittelema kirkko, jonka 1800-luvun lopulla tehdyistä korjauksista peräisin oleva asu on erinomaisesti säilynyt.
Lestijokisuussa sijaitseva Raumankarin vanha markkinapaikka muodostaa Himangan kirkonkylän vanhan ytimen. Asuintontit sijaitsevat tiheästi kahden raitin ja entisen Vaasan maantien varrella. Vanhalla Vaasan maantiellä olleen ansassillan kiviarkkujen varaan on rakennettu kevyen liikenteen silta. Vanhimmat Raumankarin asuinrakennuksista ovat 1800-luvun alkupuolelta. Useimpiin pihapiireihin liittyy vanhoja aittoja ja karjasuojia. Kylän yhteismaalla Piispanrannassa on kylän verkkovajojen rivistö. Piispanrannasta jokisuuhun päin olevalla rannalla on muutamia kookkaita makasiinirakennuksia, muuten rantavyöhyke on rakentamatonta.
Raumankarin läpi kulkevan tien maisemallisena päätteenä, valtatien 8 toisella puolella, on Jacob Rijfin 1794 suunnittelema Himangan kirkko tapuleineen. Vanhan hautausmaan ympäröimä Himangan kirkko on muodoltaan tasavartinen, sisäviisteinen ristikirkko, jonka ristikeskuksesta kohoaa kahdeksankulmainen torninalusrakenne. Kirkko on korjattu nykyasuunsa 1897. Erillinen, puinen kellotapuli on rakennettu 1823 keskipohjalaisen kirkonrakentaja Niilo Koskelan eli Pyörteen (Pyörret) johdolla.
"Tämän asutuskeskuksen [Himanka] keskipisteenä voidaan pitää rakennettua isoa Kirkonkylää, joka muistuttaa miltei kauppalaa tai pientä kaupunkia; siellä on mm. säästöpankki, puhelinkeskus, postitoimisto, apteekki, lääkärin asunto, useita kauppapuoteja, suuri höyrysaha, laivatelakka ja muita teollisuuslaitoksia. Kirkon edustalla on hyväpohjainen, suojattu Himangan eli Rauman satama, johon aavalta mereltä johtaa turvallinen laivareitti" (Suomen Maa 1925). Yllä kuvattu Raumankarin perusrakenne on säilynyt.
Historia

Description
Raumankari is one of the best-known historic market places located at the river mouths of the coastal parishes of Ostrobothnia. The church village that developed into a market place has retained its compact structure and small-scale building stock. Himanka church is a church designed by Jacob Rijf at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, a well-known Central Ostrobothnian church builder, and its form, dating from repairs carried out at the end of the 19th century, has been excellently preserved.
The old market place of Raumankari, located at the mouth of the Lestijoki, forms the old core of the Himanka church village. Residential plots are densely located along two raitti and the former Vaasan maantie. A light-traffic bridge has been built on the stone caissons of the ansassilta that was on the old Vaasan maantie. The oldest of the Raumankari residential buildings date from the early 19th century. Most yards include old granary storehouses and cattle shelters. On the village common land at Piispanranta there is a row of the village's net sheds. On the shore from Piispanranta towards the river mouth there are a few large storehouses; otherwise the shoreline is undeveloped.
At the scenic end of the road passing through Raumankari, on the other side of valtatie 8, stands Himanka church with its bell tower, designed by Jacob Rijf in 1794. Surrounded by the old cemetery, Himanka church is a cross-plan church of equal arms with internally canted corners, from whose crossing rises an octagonal tower base structure. The church was restored to its present form in 1897. The separate wooden bell tower was built in 1823 under the direction of the Central Ostrobothnian church builder Niilo Koskela, also known as Pyörre (Pyörret).
"The central point of this settlement [Himanka] can be considered the large, built-up church village, which almost resembles a market town or a small city; there are, among other things, a savings bank, telephone exchange, post office, pharmacy, doctor's residence, several shops, a large steam sawmill, a shipyard and other industrial establishments. In front of the church lies the well-founded, sheltered harbour of Himanka, or Rauma, to which a safe shipping route leads from the open sea" (Suomen Maa 1925).
The basic structure of Raumankari described above has survived.
History
Raumankari was a well-known market place already in the 17th century. Permanent settlement arose at Raumankari, which later became the church village of Himanka, at the latest at the beginning of the 18th century. In the 1790s the place prospered when Anders Roos, a merchant from Kokkola, established a sawmill at Raumankoski. Sawmilling at Raumankari later moved to the river mouth at Sautinkari, where it ceased only in the 1950s. The settlement at Raumankari became concentrated on the kari between the southern bank of the river and the stream flowing into the Lestijoki, Vähärauma.
Himanka was founded as a saarnahuonekunta of Lohtaja in the 18th century and as a chapelry in 1846. Himanka Church was built in 1794 under the direction of Jacob Rijf, a church builder and master builder from Pietarsaari, who had been appointed official provincial master builder of Länsipohja in 1784. Himanka was established as its own parish in 1906, after Himanka municipality had been separated from Lohtaja in 1898. A project started in 1866 to turn Raumankari into a market town partly foundered on the opposition of Kokkola burghers.
The relocation of the road alignment away from Raumankari in the 1950s, in connection with the construction of valtatie 8, shifted the focus of settlement and services to the new main road.
