Kuvaus
Vimpelin puisen pyörökirkon ympäristössä eri aikakausien arkkitehtuuri yhdistyy kirkonkylän historiaa kuvaavaksi monipuoliseksi julkisten rakennusten kokonaisuudeksi 1800-luvun alkupuolen kirkollisista rakennuksista 1990-luvun pesäpallostadioniin. Savonjoen pohjoisrannalla on Etelä-Pohjanmaalle tyypillinen tiiviisti rakennettu jokivarsikylä, nauhamainen maatilojen pihapiirien ja omakotitalojen muodostama alue.
Savonjoen törmällä sijaitseva Vimpelin pohjoinen puupantheon edustaa kustavilaista uusklassismia. Kaksitoistakulmaisen pyörökirkon halkaisija on 24 metriä. Paanukaton keskellä on tornikellolla varustettu lanterniini viirinkukkoineen. Kirkkosalin holvi noudattaa pohjamuotoa. Alttarin kummallakin puolella kuorin itäseinällä on symmetrisesti sijoitetut saarnastuoli ja virrenveisuuta johtaneen lukkarin tuoli, joiden veistokoristelun kuva-aiheet kertovat niiden funktiosta. Käynti molempiin tapahtuu kuoriseinän takana olevasta pienestä sakaristosta. Alttarilaitteen Ristiinnaulittu-aiheinen alttaritaulu vuodelta 1872 on hovimaalari R.W. Ekmanin maalaama.

Description
In the surroundings of the Vimpeli wooden round church, architecture from different periods combines into a varied ensemble of public buildings that depicts the history of the church village, from church buildings of the first half of the 19th century to the 1990s pesäpallo stadium. On the northern bank of the Savonjoki lies a densely built riverside village typical of Southern Ostrobothnia, a strip-like area formed by the yards of farms and detached houses.
Vimpeli's northern wooden pantheon, situated on the Savonjoki embankment, represents Gustavian neoclassicism. The twelve-sided round church has a diameter of 24 metres. In the middle of the pantile roof is a lantern with a tower clock and a weathervane. The church hall's vault follows the ground plan. On either side of the altar, on the east wall of the chancel, are symmetrically placed the pulpit and the chair of the precentor who led the singing of hymns; the subjects of their sculptural decoration reveal their function. Access to both is from a small sacristy behind the chancel wall. The altarpiece of the altar fittings, depicting the Crucified One, dating from 1872, was painted by court painter R.W. Ekman.
The churchyard, with its bell tower, hero graves and jääkari memorials, frames the round church. The bell tower is raised, and its lantern was completed in 1867 to a design by church builder Lauri Heikki Kuorikoski.
Beside the church are a functionalist cooperative store related to the economic history of the church village, and the pesäpallo arena at Saarikenttä, completed in 1990, with its colourful spectator stands.
North-west and north of the church, on the opposite bank of the Savonjoki, stand five one-and-a-half-storey Ostrobothnian-type farmhouses with their gable ends facing the river. The residential buildings are near the riverbank, and the outbuildings are seen from the river at the inner parts of the plots. The oldest of the houses were built at the end of the 18th century, and the newest at the turn of the 20th century.
History
Vimpeli was established as a chapel under Lappajärvi in 1805. It has been an independent parish since 1867.
Vimpeli church was built according to a drawing made in 1806 by Jacob Rijf, who was elected provincial building master of Länsipohja in 1784 and who lived in Pietarsaari. The church was completed in 1809, the year after Rijf's death. The bell tower was completed at the same time as the church was built, in 1807. The church's first repair was carried out under Jaakko Kuorikoski in the 1830s, when the foundation was renewed and the leaning walls were straightened with följare. In the 1970s a concrete floor was poured in the church and the structural weaknesses of the church were improved. In the same context, the original interior colour scheme of the church hall was also restored.
The Saarikenttä pesäpallo arena with its spectator stands was built in 1990 according to a plan by architect Pentti Ilveskoski (Maa ja Vesi).
