The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kontiopuisto on tyypillinen jälleenrakennuskauden pientaloalue, jonka asemakaava on arkkitehti Otto-I. Meurmanin suunnittelema ja jonka omakotitalojen rakentamisessa on hyödynnetty Suomen arkkitehtiliiton jälleenrakennustoimiston tyyppipiirustuksia.

Kontiopuisto Pieksämäen rautatieaseman itäpuolella on tiivis asuinalue, jonka rakentamisaikainen rakenne on pääosiltaan säilynyt. Puutarhatontit ovat loivasti kaartavien Laakso-, Kaarto- ja Metsämiehentien varsilla. Asuinrakennukset ovat yleensä kiinni katulinjassa ja talousrakennukset tontin takaosassa. Puolitoistakerroksiset omakotitalot on rakennettu vaiheittain, useimmat tyyppipiirustuksia hyödyntäen.

Pieksämäen 1. asemakaavan 1937 laati arkkitehti Otto-Iivari Meurman. Myös Kontionpuisto rakennettiin Meurmanin asemakaavan mukaisesti. Meurman suunnitteli ja opetti asemakaavoitusta, ja hänen oppinsa vaikuttivat voimakkaasti sodanjälkeisen Suomen kaupunkien kehityslinjoihin.

Kontiopuiston omakotitaloissa, kuten monen toisen maailmansodan jälkeen rakennetun omakotialueen taloissa, hyödynnettiin tyyppitalosuunnitelmia, jotka laadittiin Suomen arkkitehtiliittoon perustetussa jälleenrakennustoimistossa. Suunnitelmien kautta arkkitehtiliitto vaikutti maan jälleenrakentamisen laatuun.

Muita jälleenrakennuskauden omakotialueita ovat esimerkiksi Kajaanin Purola, Valkeakosken Ulvajanniemi, Karkkilan Sudetti, Kuopion Niirala, Joensuun Kanervala ja Otsola sekä Äänekosken Markkamäki.

Kontiopuisto is a typical small-house area of the post-war reconstruction era, whose town plan was designed by architect Otto-I. Meurman and in whose detached houses the standard drawings of the reconstruction office of the Finnish Association of Architects were used.

Kontiopuisto, east of Pieksämäki railway station, is a compact residential area whose structure from the time of construction has largely survived. The garden plots lie along the gently curving Laaksotie, Kaartotie and Metsämiehentie. The residential buildings are usually close to the street line, and the outbuildings are at the rear of the plots. The one-and-a-half-storey detached houses were built in stages, most using standard drawings.

The first town plan of Pieksämäki, dated 1937, was drawn up by architect Otto-Iivari Meurman. Kontionpuisto was also built according to Meurman's town plan. Meurman both designed and taught town planning, and his teachings strongly influenced the development of Finnish towns after the war.

In the detached houses of Kontiopuisto, as in those of many other detached-house areas built after the Second World War, standard house designs were used, prepared in the reconstruction office established within the Finnish Association of Architects. Through these designs the Association of Architects influenced the quality of the country's post-war reconstruction.

Other detached-house areas of the reconstruction era include Purola in Kajaani, Ulvajanniemi in Valkeakoski, Sudetti in Karkkila, Niirala in Kuopio, Kanervala and Otsola in Joensuu, and Markkamäki in Äänekoski.
