Kuvaus
Tien varsilla on taisteluasemien lisäksi neuvostosotilaiden hautapaikkoja. Tien päässä on maamme vanhin rajavartioasema.
Historia

Description
The battle sites of the Winter War were the scene of some of the most significant fighting between Finland and the Soviet Union in the eastern Kainuu and Lapland regions from late 1939 into early 1940. Kuhmo, Suomussalmi and Salla contain numerous Winter War battle sites. The Raatteen tie in Suomussalmi is one of the best-known battle sites in Finnish military history, and it is also a museum road selected by Tiehallinto.
At the Saunajärvi isthmus in Kuhmo there are Winter War fortifications and defensive lines belonging to the Salpa Line. Later, one of the 50 so-called ruotsalaistalo houses built in Kuhmo after the war was constructed in the Saunajärvi battle area. Near the house are a stone anti-tank barrier belonging to the Salpa Line fortification chain, a restored bunker and trenches, and also one of the Kainuu stream mills, the Saunajärvi Niska mill.
At the eastern end of the Raatteen tie, which leads from Kokkojoki in Suomussalmi, are restored field fortifications of the Purasjoki Line, which belongs to the Salpa Line. Along the road, in addition to the combat positions, there are burial sites of Soviet soldiers. At the end of the road is the oldest border guard station in Finland.
The Paikanselkä battle area from the Winter War and the Continuation War in Salla lies in gently sloping forest terrain along the Salla–Kemijärvi road. The area contains earth and log-revetted trenches and bunkers, which have been restored with funds from the municipality of Salla and certain organisations. In connection with the Paikanselkä battle area have been erected memorials to the Swedish volunteers (1992), to the Mannerheim Cross knights (1992), and to the end of the Winter War (1971), as well as a memorial statue (1949) to Magnus Dyrssen, commander of the Swedish troops who fell at Paikanselkä on 1.3.1940. The anti-tank barriers in the Salla church village are among the northernmost installations of the Salpa Line, which extends from the Gulf of Finland to Lapland.
History
Battles of the Winter War were fought at Suomussalmi from the last day of November 1939 onwards, when the 163rd Division of Soviet troops crossed the border with the aim of advancing to Oulu. The main forces of the Finnish army were concentrated at Lehtovaara in Juntusranta and at Raate.
The fiercest motti battles of the war were fought on the Saunajärvi isthmus in Kuhmo and on the Raate Road in Suomussalmi. The battles on the Raate Road at Haukila, Tyynelä, Lokoharju and Raate took place in the first days of January 1940 between units of the Soviet and Finnish armies. The Suomussalmi-Raate double operation, which resulted in a Finnish victory over materially superior Soviet forces and the end of Soviet attacks in the area, became one of the most significant battles in Finnish military history.
The Kokkojoki-Raate road, chosen as a museum road and near which the most successful battles of the Winter War were fought, had been completed as employment relief work in the village of Raate in 1915-1919.
