Verlan padotun kosken yläpuolella on suoraan vedestä kohoavassa kallioseinämässä punavärillä tehtyjä kivikautisia maalauksia.

The Verla mill is a unique industrial environment from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The groundwood mill and board mill form a coherent factory complex from the early years of Finland's forest industry. Verla was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996, and it is a nationally valuable scenic landmark.

The groundwood mill, board mill and drying house designed by architect Edward Dippell are richly detailed brick architecture. The decorative Patruunan pytinki was built in 1885 and 1898 (E. Dippell). The park-like courtyard also contains a summer house, a fire equipment shed, a lime brick materials store and a mill. The factory has survived largely in its turn-of-the-century form and, with its original machinery, gives a unique picture of the industrial environment of that time.

The water power of the Verlankoski rapids has been harnessed by building power stations on its edge in three phases, from the 1920s to the 1990s. In addition to the dam structures, the power stations on the edge of the rapids date from 1954 and 1995.

The industrial community includes the village of Jaala, which grew up along the road on the west side of the river, as well as old workers' housing areas, some of which are on the east bank of the rapids.

Above the dammed Verlankoski rapids, on a rock face rising straight from the water, are Stone Age paintings done in red pigment. They depict, among other things, elk and human figures.

Engineer Hugo Neuman founded the Verla groundwood mill in 1872 on the lower course of the Mäntyharju timber floating route. The area had abundant unused forest resources.

The factory burned down already four years after its founding, but operations soon resumed. Austrian-born paper master Gottlieb Kreidl, German paper master Luis Haenel and Viipuri businessman, Consul Wilhelm Dippell founded a new company in 1882. The new groundwood mill and board mill were first built entirely of wood. The board drying house was destroyed by fire in 1892, and in its place the present four-storey red brick drying building was built. It was designed by Viipuri architect Carl Edward Dippell. Because of the fire hazard, the groundwood mill and board mill were also built of red brick in 1895. Because the walls were built around the old wooden factory building, production could be kept running throughout the construction.

Production at the Verla mill ended in 1964, and the factory museum opened to the public in 1972.
