Kuvaus
Hervanta on yksi Suomen tunnetuimmista 1970-luvulla rakennetuista lähiöistä. Hervannan asemakaavallinen idea perustuu kompaktin kaupunkirakenteen teoriaan vastareaktiona puutarhakaupunki-ideologialle.
Liikekeskuksen arkkitehtuuri muodostaa vastapainon kerrostaloalueen arkkitehtuurille.
Historia
Ajatus Tampereen vanhan kaupunkirakenteen ulkopuolelle rakennettavasta satelliitista syntyi Tampereen yleiskaavasuunnitelmassa 1966.
Liikekeskusta laajennettiin itäpuolelle 2006-2007 arkkitehtitoimisto Eero Lahti Oy:n suunnitelmin. Kokonaisuuden nimeksi tuli kauppakeskus DUO.

Description
Hervanta is one of the best-known suburbs in Finland built in the 1970s. The town-planning concept of Hervanta is based on the theory of the compact urban structure, as a counter-reaction to the garden city ideology. At the heart of the concrete residential area, in the manner typical of suburban planning of the time, are a commercial centre and a complex of public service buildings, comprising an activity centre as well as a leisure and parish centre with parish facilities. The buildings designed by Raili and Reima Pietilä are constructed of red brick, which creates a contrast with the surrounding concrete block-of-flats construction. The combination of the brick architecture of the central-axis composition and the green environment gives the residential area its own clear identity.
The architecture of the commercial centre forms a counterweight to the architecture of the block-of-flats area. The main façade of the building is symmetrical, enlivened with arched motifs and various masonry techniques. The two-level inner square placed on the central axis stands out in the building mass as a higher element, surrounded by large shops and specialist stores. The newer section, clad in brick, matches the older part in width and height.
The leisure and parish centre uses irregularly shaped windows, gently curving forms and rounded corners as façade motifs. The central space of the parish centre is the church hall, while the leisure centre houses hobby rooms and a sports hall.
The building group known as the activity centre has three parts: a health centre, a library and a cinema. They are linked by a partly covered central passage and a small square. The buildings are characterised by eaves that curve upwards and outwards.
History
The idea of building a satellite outside the old urban structure of Tampere arose in the Tampere general plan of 1966. The town plan competition held by Arkkitehtiliitto in 1967 was won by the proposal of architect Aarno Ruusuvuori, part of which was a central-axis plan for public buildings. Architects Reima and Raili Pietilä developed the plan in accordance with the town plan in 1974-1979; the commercial centre and the leisure and parish centre were completed in 1979, and the activity centre in 1989.
The commercial centre was extended to the east in 2006-2007 to designs by the architectural office Eero Lahti Oy. The complex was named the shopping centre DUO.
