Kuvaus
Historia
Seuran työmuotojen laajentuessa Sortavalaan rakennettiin uusia tiloja. Sotien jälkeen seuran oli etsittävä uudet toimitilat. Uudeksi keskuspaikkakunnaksi tuli Pieksämäki, jonne rakennettiin Raamattutalo, Diakonissalaitos, Koivurannan lastenkoti ja Vaalijalan keskuslaitos.
Suomen kirkon sisälähetysseuran Vaalijalan vajaamielishoitolan vastaanotto- ja keskuslaitoksen kutsukilpailun voitti arkkitehti Yrjö Lindegren. Lindegren sijoitti laitosrakennukset kirkkopihan ympärille ja asuinrakennukset rantaan.
Vaalijalan vajaamielishoitola rakennettiin vaiheittain 1948-1966 entisen Nenonpellon kersantin sotilasvirkatalon paikalle. Vaalijalan kirkon. Blomstedt laati suunnitelmat Lindegerenin ideoita ja arkkitehtuuria kunnioittaen.
Hoitolaitos eli kuntoutuskeskus on alkuperäisessä käytössä ja Savon kehitysvammapiirin kuntainliiton omistama.

Description
The Vaalijala care institution ranks among the finest institutional architecture of the post-war reconstruction period. The overall layout of the buildings and the first buildings are based on plans by architect Yrjö Lindegren.
The area, built in a park-like lakeshore forest at the northern end of Pieksäjärvi, comprises some thirty treatment, service and residential buildings. The plan was drawn up on the pavilion principle, so that each treatment group has its own buildings, which are connected to one another by glazed corridors. The pavilions and glazed corridors curve around the central courtyard, or ”ruusupiha”. The pavilion buildings have a light rendered lower storey, a dark timber upper floor and a steep tiled roof.
The steep-roofed church and assembly hall in the middle of the ”ruusupiha” were already included in the proposal by Yrjö Lindegren that won the architectural competition. The buildings designed by Aulis Blomstedt and completed in 1958 were also developed on the basis of these. The water tower associated with the service building rises as a landmark of the courtyard complex.
The staff housing, some of which was later taken into institutional use, lies outside the central courtyard.
History
The Suomen kirkon sisälähetysseura was founded in 1905. The Sortavalan Diakonissalaitos passed into its ownership in 1906, and in 1918 the Kasvattajaopisto began operating there, for the training of women directors of children's homes and other child welfare workers. As the society's work expanded to Sortavala, new premises were built there. After the wars the society had to find new premises. The new central location became Pieksämäki, where Raamattutalo, Diakonissalaitos, Koivurannan lastenkoti and Vaalijalan keskuslaitos were built.
The invitational competition for the reception and central building of the Vaalijala vajaamielishoitola of the Suomen kirkon sisälähetysseura was won by architect Yrjö Lindegren. Lindegren placed the institutional buildings around the church yard and the residential buildings by the shore.
The Vaalijalan vajaamielishoitola was built in stages in 1948-1966 on the site of the former Nenonpelto sergeant's military official farm. The general plan and most of the buildings of the first phase, 1948-1950, were designed by architect Yrjö Lindegren (1900-1952). Lindegren had earlier become known as a designer of sports grounds and sports buildings (see Olympiastadion and Riihimäen urheilupuisto). After Lindegren's death, the planning of Vaalijala was continued by architect Aulis Blomstedt, who designed, among other things, the Vaalijala church. Blomstedt drew up the plans in respect of Lindegren's ideas and architecture.
The care institution, that is the rehabilitation centre, is still in its original use and is owned by the Savon kehitysvammapiirin kuntainliitto.
