The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Emolanjoen varrella on esikaupunkiasutusta edeltävältä ajalta periytyvä Hauskan mylly.

Kaupunkimainen asutus sai alkunsa 1865, jolloin Rouhialan kartanon omistaja A.J. Wirilander vuokrasi ensimmäisen tontin Likolammen rannalta. Asutus kasvoi nopeasti 1889 valmistuneen Savon radan rakennustyöläisten ja samana vuonna perustetun Saksalan sahan työntekijöiden asettuessa Emolan alueelle.

Alueelle laadittiin palstoitussuunnitelma vuonna 1900. Arkkitehti O.-I. Meurmanin laatima asemakaava, joka noudatti alueen senaikaista asutusta, vahvistettiin 1934. 1940-luvun lopun pika-asutus noudatti Meurmanin kaavaa.

The Emola suburban area is one of the few detached-house districts outside towns that have kept their character, having been built freely without town planning or supervision.

Emola, built on the ridge between small ponds and the Emolanjoki river to the north of the Mikkeli grid plan area, is a freely built suburban area. The suburban area was mostly built up by 1931, but along Kalevankatu and at the northern end of Emolankatu there are also detached houses from the post-war reconstruction period. Despite its wooden building stock of various ages and partial renewal, Emola has retained its distinctive historical structure and its old suburban townscape.

In addition to single-family housing, the area has the Rouhiala upper school (1914) and lower school (1920). Along the Emolanjoki river is the Hauska mill, dating from the period before the suburban settlement.

The Emola suburban area was formed on the land of the Emola horse farm and the Rouhiala manor, on the outskirts of the town of Mikkeli, mainly on undeveloped meadow and field land and on upland terrain. Urban-style settlement began in 1865, when A.J. Wirilander, owner of the Rouhiala manor, leased the first plot on the shore of Likolampi. The settlement grew rapidly as the construction workers of the Savo Line, completed in 1889, and the workers of the Saksala sawmill, founded the same year, settled in the Emola area.

A plot division plan was drawn up for the area in 1900. Buildings rose on leased plots, and by the early 1910s the southern part of the area was fairly densely settled. The sawmill helped its workers, especially in the 1920s, to obtain building materials, that is, boards. Emola was mostly built up by 1931, when it was annexed to the town of Mikkeli. The town plan drawn up by architect O.-I. Meurman, which followed the settlement pattern of the time, was confirmed in 1934. The hasty settlement of the late 1940s followed Meurman's plan.
