The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Vehkalahden kylän Telkkämäki, valtakunnallinen kaskimuseo, edustaa pohjoissavolaista maaseudun kulttuurimaisemaa. Itä-Suomessa kauan yleinen kaskeaminen on jatkunut Telkkämäellä 1940-luvulle saakka.

Telkkämäen asutusta edustavat pienet tilat rikkonaisine viljelyksineen. Tiestö on rakennettu alueelle vasta 1960-luvulla.

Telkkämäki in the village of Vehkalahti, the national kaskimuseo, represents the cultural landscape of rural North Savo. Slash-and-burn cultivation, long common in Eastern Finland, continued at Telkkämäki until the 1940s.

The settlement of Telkkämäki is represented by small holdings with fragmented cultivated fields. The most traditional of these are Telkkämäki and Rietula, whose building stock dates mainly from the turn of the century. The log main building of the Telkkämäki farm dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the farmyard with its buildings took on its present appearance in the 1930s. The road network was built in the area only in the 1960s.

Telkkämäki, delimited as a nature conservation area, is also valuable for its flora. Wooded pastures, kaskimetsät, shore and flood meadows form a diverse and distinctive traditional environment.

The plot named Telkkämäki was separated from Mustolanmäki in the 1870s. The croft was inhabited by Matti Mustonen, son of Mustolanmäki. The holding became independent in 1900. Metsähallitus bought Telkkämäki in 1984, after which the buildings and yard were restored into an attraction.

Telkkämäki was protected as a nature conservation area in 1989, and it was defined as a traditional landscape in the report of the ympäristöministeriö's maisema-aluetyöryhmä.
