The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Luhangan vanha kirkko on edustavimpia esimerkkejä kirkkoarkkitehtina poikkeuksellisen tuotteliaan arkkitehti Josef Stenbäckin 1800-luvun lopulla ja 1900-luvun alussa piirtämistä puukirkoista.

Kangastenmäellä sijaitseva puukirkko, jota on paikallisesti kutsuttu Luhangan lumilinnaksi, toimii kesäkirkkona. 1500 hengelle rakennetussa hirsikatedraalissa on kuorin puoleisessa päässä runkohuoneen korkuinen poikkilaiva ja länsipäässä torni. Korkeaa kirkkosalia reunustavat lehterit.

The old church of Luhanka is one of the most representative examples of the wooden churches drawn at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century by architect Josef Stenbäck, who was exceptionally prolific as a church architect.

The wooden church situated on Kangastenmäki, locally called the Luhanka lumilinna, functions as a summer church. The log cathedral built for 1500 people has, at the chancel end, a transept as high as the nave, and a tower at the west end. Galleries line the tall church hall. No essential alterations have been made to the church, which has survived in its original form. The organ made in 1897 by organ builder Albanus Jurva is well preserved, though not entirely in its original form.

The previous church of Luhanka, which had been separated as a chapel of Sysmä in 1766, together with the separate bell tower belonging to it, was demolished after the new church was completed. The parish became independent in 1864.

Built to drawings made by architect Josef Stenbäck at the end of the 1880s, the church was completed in 1893. The master builder was Jakob Östman. The church went out of year-round use after the construction, nearby, of a combined church and funeral chapel designed by architect Einari Teräsvirta and completed in 1958. Interior and exterior painting was carried out in the church in 1986-1987 to designs by Tampere architects Maarit and Aarni Holttinen.
