Reason for registration
it is dedicated to the memory of Bard John MacLean (1787-1848), the most representative Gaelic Bard of the New World and one of the great modern Gaelic Bards who composed, among other poems, "The Gloomy Forest", one of the most graphic descriptions of pioneer conditions in eastern North America; is the ancestral home of the descendants of Bard John MacLean (who built and lived in an earlier home, destroyed by fire c. 1850, on the property); is maintained to commemorate Bard John MacLean; and is believed to be one of the last remaining houses built in Antigonish County by Scottish immigrants of the early and middle 19th century.
