Reason for registration
its core heritage value with events associated with Dr. Carry Best (in 1941) and Viola Desmond (in 1947) and their respective roles they played towards positive rights for Black Nova Scotians. Also, because of its character defining elements; which include: its location on Provost Street in New Glasgow; three-storey rectangular structure with a flat roof; concrete and steel-framed construction; brick cladding with three inset-bays on its west facing and east facing facades and nine inset-bays on the south facing façade along Viola’s Way; and simple brick detailing on the facades including the arched soldier-coarse lintels above each window opening and the corbelled brick detailing that cap each of the inset-bays.
